Garage Door Installation in Medway, MA

A 16-foot steel door that was fitted twenty years ago on a Medway colonial is usually still running the original torsion spring, and that spring has a cycle life that ran out long before the owner noticed the door getting heavier to lift by hand. When it finally lets go, or when the panels have rusted through at the bottom and won’t seal against the slab anymore, replacement is the honest answer, not another patch repair.

We install garage doors across the towns around our Bellingham shop, and Medway is close enough that a measuring visit and the installation itself can usually happen within the same week, not spread across a month of back-and-forth.

Garage Door Installation in Medway

Most installation calls in Medway start one of two ways. Either the old door has failed in a way that makes repair pointless – a cracked bottom panel section, delaminated wood, a broken hinge that’s torn through the steel around it – or the homeowner wants an upgrade: better insulation, a quieter opener, or a style change that fits a renovation. Either way, the job is the same core work. We remove the old door and track, check the opening framing for square and for rot where the jamb meets the slab, and set new vertical tracks and horizontal track to the header height the new door needs.

The spring system gets sized to the actual door weight, not guessed from the old spring. A torsion spring mounted above the opening on a shaft with cable drums at each end is the standard setup for anything heavier than a light single door, and it has to be matched to the door’s weight within a few pounds or the opener will fight it every cycle. We set the track plumb, lift cables onto the drums under proper tension, hang the opener’s trolley and arm, and then run the full cycle and reversal test before we call it finished.

What we look at

Door opening and available space

We measure the rough opening width and height, headroom above the opening for the torsion shaft and springs, and backroom depth for the horizontal track. Low-headroom garages and openings with a side-mounted electrical panel or a water heater crowding the track path change which spring and track configuration will actually fit, so this gets checked before anything is ordered.

Door balance, spring type, and cycle rating

Balance is tested by disconnecting the opener and lifting the door by hand. A properly balanced door stays put at any point in its travel. If it slams down or shoots up, the spring is wrong for the door weight. We also talk through cycle rating at this stage – a 10,000-cycle spring costs less up front than a 20,000-cycle spring but needs replacing roughly twice as often, and for a daily-use garage that math matters.

Cables, drums, and rollers

New lift cables, properly sized cable drums, and rollers rated for the door’s weight and expected cycle count go on with every install, not as an upsell. A cable that’s too thin for the door, or a drum with the wrong groove pitch, is a common cause of doors that run crooked or drop suddenly within the first year of a cut-rate install.

Track alignment, opener settings, and safety reversal

Track gets set and checked with a level at multiple points, not eyeballed. Once the door is hung, we set the opener’s travel limits and force settings so the door stops at the right points without straining, then run the safety reversal test required by federal standard – the door has to reverse immediately on contact with a 2×4 laid flat on the floor in its path. We don’t hand over the remote until that test passes.

Medway’s housing stock gives us a reasonable mix to work with, and the right door spec usually follows the age of the house pretty closely.

Homes in Medway

A lot of the garage stock we see in Medway sits on colonials and capes built from the 1970s through the 1990s, mostly attached two-car garages with double doors between 15 and 16 feet wide. Newer construction and some of the larger lots toward the Millis and Franklin lines carry bigger three-car layouts, which usually means one double door and one single working side by side on separate openings and separate spring systems.

We still find original wood carriage-style doors on some of the older farmhouses closer to the town center, and those are frequently sound enough structurally that the owner just wants new hardware, weatherstripping, and a properly matched spring rather than a full replacement. Detached garages, more common on the older rural lots, often run lighter single doors with simpler track runs and smaller openers, which usually keeps the install cost down.

Cost depends on the door itself more than on the labor, so we price it after seeing the opening and talking through materials rather than quoting a number over the phone.

What it costs

A standard steel single-layer door on an existing, unmodified opening runs toward the lower end of the range, typically around {PRICE_LOW}. Insulated doors, custom widths, carriage-house styling, or an opening that needs track reconfiguration or header repair push the job toward {PRICE_HIGH} or beyond. Opener replacement, if you want it done at the same time, is priced separately and depends on drive type and horsepower. We give a firm number after the measuring visit, not a range we adjust later.

Being close by matters more for installation scheduling than people expect, since it affects how many measuring and install trips are realistic in a given week.

How fast we can get there

Medway sits about 4 miles from our Bellingham shop, which keeps it an easy add to the schedule without a long drive eating into the appointment. We don’t promise a same-day install since doors are ordered to spec, but the measuring visit can usually be arranged quickly and we’ll give you a straight answer on install timing once we know what the opening needs.

Got Questions?

Common questions

How long does a garage door installation take in Medway?

Most single-door installs take roughly half a day once the door has arrived. Jobs that need track reconfiguration, header repair, or two doors take longer. We'll give you a time estimate at the measuring visit.

Steel and composite carriage-style doors are made to mimic traditional wood paneling and hardware, and that's usually what we recommend over replacing with real wood, since it holds up better against New England winters with far less upkeep.

Yes, removal and disposal of the old door, track, and spring system is part of the installation job.

Opener sizing depends on door weight and width more than on horsepower marketing numbers. We size it to your specific door at the measuring visit rather than defaulting to one model for every job.

Straight swap-outs on an existing opening generally don't require a permit, but any structural change to the opening itself may. We'll flag it if your job needs one.
